Coming off a fierce robbery allegation that threatened the stability of his career, afro-fusion singer Burna Boy is finally set to disrupt the airwaves with a new project titled “OUTSIDE” slated for a January 26, release.
“I’m already done working on the OUTSIDE project”, Burna had revealed in September 2017. This announcement was followed with the release of several singles; Deja Vu, Gba, Sekkle Down and Heaven’s Gate to salivate and build up anticipation for the project.
A private listening was conducted in Lagos last weekend where industry insiders, friends, and family members were treated to an exclusive listen of the tape and some backstories on the creative process and what inspired the records on the project. With a new record deal from Atlantic Records and a positive energy from his fans, Burna Boy seems positioned for a definite release.
To guide your anticipation and further salivate you, below are three things you should expect from the OUTSIDE mixtape.
From inception, Burna Boy had been crested with the badge of versatility but this time, Burna is pushing far beyond the boundaries of his musical dimensions. His recent single; Heaven’s Gate featuring British singer Lily Allen properly reveals the depth that the singer is currently reaching for. Leaning on his dancehall strengths, Burna experimented with Indian rhythms and some litters of the Cockney influence. “The speed of the record is a departure from my usual mid-tempo style”, Burna Boy revealed.
These sonic experiments and more is what Burna Boy would be presenting on this project.
Deducing from the pattern of the pre-released singles, the OUTSIDE tape would be accommodating a handful of guest verses. The height of Burna Boy’s dexterity mirrors him as a self-sufficient musical machine but to see him offer a collaboration (Heaven’s Gate) as the lead single for the project suggests that he is exploring external effects. Another pre-released single titled Sekkle Downfeatures buzzing UK act – J.Hus and without a doubt, there’s still a collaboration or two on the OUTSIDE mixtape that Burna Boy is yet to reveal. A Phyno or Davido collaboration won’t be far-fetched.
The OUTSIDE tape appears to hold pieces of information about his come-up stories and what moulded his persona. Burna revealed during the private listening of the project that a certain track on the mixtape titled “City Vibrations” will contain stories about his city of birth – Port Harcourt. Burna Boy has strong emotional attachments to Port Harcourt and the reflections that will be contained in this track might also accommodate childhood experiences that shaped his upbringing.
From murder allegations, robbery attacks, baby-mama drama to blunt and provocative utterances, Burna Boy has at (almost) every point in his prime been dragged into various threatening controversies – this tape is positioned to serve as a window to bring OUTSIDEr’s into the chambers of his thoughts.
